GRHA Helps DU Acquire Lands at Risk

Expansion of Richard Bong State Recreation Area: New Land for Conservation and Public Access
The Richard Bong State Recreation Area is now 132 acres larger, thanks to a recent acquisition by Ducks Unlimited (DU). This newly acquired parcel, known as the "Wood Duck Reserve," protects a valuable mix of wetland and upland habitats that are crucial for waterfowl and other wildlife, while also opening new land for public enjoyment and access.
The establishment and dedication of the Wood Duck Reserve on September 10, 2024, marks a significant milestone in conservation efforts. This project is a testament to the power of collaboration, involving multiple stakeholders including Ducks Unlimited, the Bong Naturalist Association, the Kenosha Unified School District, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR). Together, these organizations have worked tirelessly to ensure the protection and sustainable management of this important habitat.
The successful acquisition of this at-risk parcel was made possible through generous funding from a variety of sources. Great Rivers Habitat Alliance, the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA), WI Energies Foundation, Bong Naturalist Association, the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, Pheasants Forever, and the National Wild Turkey Federation all contributed to the project. Their support underscores the broad-based commitment to preserving natural habitats and promoting sustainable land use.
The Wood Duck Reserve will serve as a critical habitat for waterfowl, providing essential resources for nesting, feeding, and migration. Beyond its importance for wildlife, the project also has significant sustainability outcomes (See Table). The wetlands on the property are capable of storing millions of gallons of water, which helps to mitigate flooding and supports groundwater recharge. This natural water storage is essential for maintaining the health of local ecosystems and ensuring the availability of water resources for future generations.
The newly acquired land was previously under threat from potential development, which could have resulted in the loss of critical habitat and diminished public access. By securing this parcel, Ducks Unlimited and its partners have not only protected the environment but also ensured that the land will remain accessible for recreational activities such as birdwatching, hiking, and educational programs.
The land acquired for the Wood Duck Reserve will be donated to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR). The WDNR will manage this land as part of the Richard Bong State Recreation Area, ensuring its long-term protection and integration into the broader conservation landscape. This management will include habitat restoration, invasive species control, and public access improvements to enhance the visitor experience.
The dedication ceremony held on September 10, 2024, was a celebration of the community's commitment to conservation. Local residents, conservationists, and supporters gathered to recognize the achievement and to learn more about the benefits of the project. The event featured speeches, guided tours, and interactive activities, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in successful conservation efforts.
GRHA is proud to partner on this effort as upstream habitat restoration not only benefits wildlife but mitigates flooding experienced downstream in the Confluence.
