Highway 79 Continues to Concern

Highway 79 Corridor Update: A Major Conservation Win

Development pressures along Highway 79 continue to be a central focus of our advocacy. This corridor remains highly vulnerable—its floodplain integrity, wildlife habitats, and community resilience are all at risk from poorly planned development. GRHA is committed to ensuring that infrastructure decisions honor the ecological and cultural significance of these lands.

Recently, a critical 117‑acre property within the corridor, owned by NC Investments LLC, was listed for sale, bringing development threats uncomfortably close. GRHA learned that a developer had already expressed interest in acquiring the property and begun due diligence and permitting discussions with the City of O’Fallon. In response, GRHA immediately engaged our conservation partners and opened conversations with the sellers and potential buyers to explore alternatives that would keep this land from being lost to development.

We are thrilled to share that the property has been purchased by a conservation buyer—the members of the Cuivre Club. Their offer was accepted despite competing bids from developers. We extend our sincere thanks to the Cuivre Club and to the seller for recognizing the importance of this land to the Confluence floodplain.

This property is an excellent candidate for inclusion in Ducks Unlimited’s Conservation Easement Program, offering a pathway to permanent protection. GRHA looks forward to supporting the Cuivre Club as they explore easement options and habitat improvement opportunities that can enhance both conservation outcomes and the long‑term value of their investment.

We remain committed to working with local and state leaders to safeguard this vital landscape and ensure that the Highway 79 corridor continues to serve as a resilient, thriving part of the Confluence region.
